How I Built a $5M/Year Business: What I Learned About Offers, Marketing, Sales, and Scaling

I graduated Florida State with a finance degree, wired $6,000 to China four days later to buy Amazon FBA inventory, and made $7,000 profit in 10 days. I thought I had it figured out. I didn't. That early win was timing — a seasonal product right before Father's Day. What it actually gave me was an introduction to the arena.

Everything I know about building a real business came from what happened after that.

The Flywheel Every Service Business Runs On

Here's the only system that matters if you're running a B2B service company: acquire a customer, get them results, use those results to acquire more customers. That's it. It's a flywheel — and if you can't predictably put someone into your system and have them exit with a quantifiable result, you will never grow a successful company.

I learned this the hard way. My first agency clients churned because I couldn't prove ROI. Then I started selling Instagram follower growth, and for the first time, the result was undeniable. Clients could see it. They renewed. I had maybe 5% monthly churn — almost unheard of — and I was stacking MRR to the point where I knew at the start of every month exactly what my baseline revenue was. That's when everything clicked.

Retention is more valuable than acquisition. Every new client is a chance to produce a case study. Every case study is ammunition to close the next client. If you're focused on hitting a big month but not on keeping people, you're just running a promotion, not a business.

Stop Building a Box Out of Thin Air

I see this constantly. Someone below $30K/month creates a rigid offer — "this is what I do, this is what I charge, get in the box" — and then wonders why they can't scale past $20K.

You can't make the box first. The box is built from feedback over time.

When you're getting started, your job on sales calls isn't to push people into a predetermined package. It's discovery. Ask them what they want, find out what result would make this a no-brainer for them, then figure out what's actually required to get them there and price accordingly.

I watched a client struggle selling explainer videos to software companies. Nobody wanted explainer videos. But software companies that run ads need ad creative — and if they're buying creative, they have money. We repositioned the offer, and it immediately started working. Same person, same skills, completely different result because the offer matched what people actually wanted to buy.

If you're selling ad management but your prospects keep asking about creative, just sell creative. Stop forcing people into a box that works for you but not for them.

Cold Outreach: Why Most People Do It Wrong

I got good at cold email the hard way — manually copying email addresses from Instagram profiles for months, writing each email by hand, clicking send one at a time.

That sounds inefficient. It was the best thing that ever happened to my outreach.

Because every time I sent an email, I was thinking: I'm speaking to one individual human. When people use automation tools from day one, they mentally shift to "I'm speaking to a thousand people at once" — and it shows in how they write. Their emails read like broadcasts. Mine read like conversations.

Even when I automated later, I never lost that context. Write to one person. Then figure out how to send it at scale.

Your Marketing Is a Long Game of Trust

I can't tell you exactly which piece of content will bring in a client. Nobody can. What I can tell you is that it's never one thing — it's the aggregate of everything they've ever seen from you.

Someone might see a tweet, then a YouTube video, then a cold email, then go to your landing page, then think about it for three weeks, then send your link to a colleague in Slack, then book a call a month later through a YouTube link. Your UTM tracking says YouTube got you that client. The cold email would like a word.

Grant Cardone said it best: your creative ad won't beat my frequency. Frequency — how many times someone encounters you across all channels — is the real driver of trust. The more someone sees you demonstrating competence, sharing results, and showing up consistently, the closer they get to being ready to buy.

Do the Thing Before You Sell the Thing

If you want to sell short-form content, post short-form content. If you want to sell cold email outreach, use cold email to get your clients. If you want to sell YouTube editing, show me your edits.

The fastest way to get good at something is to do it yourself first. That period isn't wasted time — it's you acquiring knowledge that people will pay for. When a client hires you for a done-for-you service, they're paying you to skip the learning curve they'd otherwise have to go through themselves. If you haven't gone through it, there's nothing to buy.

You are your first case study. Get the result for yourself, then sell the result to others. It really is that simple.
