How Scott Hit $33,000/Month with a Video Marketing Agency (And What Actually Got Him There)

I sat down with Scott Millard in Tampa recently, and his story is one of those that I think every freelancer or agency owner needs to hear — not because it's glamorous, but because it's honest.

Scott went from making $3K a month at a social media startup, moving back into his childhood bedroom at his mom's house, to running a video marketing agency doing $33K a month. He did it in roughly six months. Here's what actually happened.

He Had the Skill — He Just Didn't Have the System

A lot of people are in Scott's exact position. They're genuinely good at something. In his case, it was video production. But being good at a skill and knowing how to turn that skill into a business are two completely different things.

When Scott came into Client Ascension, he didn't know what a cold email was. He didn't know what a domain reputation was. He didn't know how to construct an offer. He literally said, "I'll sell videos online" — which isn't an offer, it's just a service with no framing around it.

Stop Selling to People Who Can't Pay You

Here's the thing Scott figured out that changed everything: he was selling to the wrong clients.

When he was at $5K a month, he was going on Twitter pitching indie makers — bootstrapped founders who genuinely liked his work but couldn't afford to pay real money for it. He'd close something for $700. That's not a business, that's a job with extra steps.

Once he started targeting funded startups and companies doing real revenue, his prices tripled. Same service. Same effort to close. Completely different result.

It takes just as much energy to sell a $5,000 engagement as it does to sell an $800 one. When you finally accept that and only pursue clients who can pay for premium work, the math starts working in your favor fast.

The Trajectory Looks Like This

Scott's monthly revenue didn't go from $3K to $33K overnight. It climbed in a way that felt almost mechanical once the system was running:

$5K → $7K → $8K → $10K → $15K → $20K → $25K → $33K

That's clean scaling. It's not sending hundreds of thousands of cold emails and hoarding clients you can't fulfill for. It's building a real book of business, delivering the work properly, and then adding more capacity as revenue grows.

Hiring Was the Unlock He Was Afraid Of

I'll be honest — I had to bully Scott into hiring someone.

He was somewhere around $25K–$30K a month and completely buried in fulfillment. He had no time to actually grow the business because all of his hours were going into making videos. I told him: you're working too much to make more money.

Once he hired a full-time editor, two things happened. First, he got his time back. Second, he had the capacity to take on more clients. Now he says hitting $50K a month — which felt impossible before — is definitely within reach.

The person he hired? He's paying them approximately what Scott was making at his old job less than a year ago. That's the compounding effect of building something.

What Most People Get Wrong About Scaling

People see someone at $100K a month and think there's some secret system they don't have access to. There isn't. When you look closely at what the most successful people in our community are doing, it comes down to this:

• More client relationships built on the same acquisition channels

• More recurring revenue from existing clients

• More team members handling fulfillment

• Slightly higher prices over time

That's it. It's the same system, just running longer and with more horsepower behind it.

Scott's goal is $500K next year. Before he joined, he said that number scared him — it felt too complex, too hard to manage. Now that he's inside and watching people at $200K+ a month operate, he sees what it actually is: more time doing the same things that already work.

The Community Part Nobody Talks About Enough

When Scott joined, he didn't expect the community aspect to matter as much as it did. He came in for the coaching.
